Detailed description of Marshall Country Club

Marshall Country Club is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Marshall, Michigan.

Marshall Country Club first opened for play in 1921 when a nine-hole course was laid out and built on Lyon Lake approximately six miles from downtown Marshall. The course was designed by Donald Ross. In 1972 an additional nine holes were constructed providing the basic 18-hole design that exists today.

The course provides beautiful views of both Lyon Lake and Fish Lake and is a delight to play with its carefully manicured greens, sculptured fairways, and strategically placed bunkers. The greens are small and difficult to hit, so you have to be accurate with your approach shots if you wish to shoot a low round. The fairways are wide open, but water hazards come into play on three holes.

Marshall Country Club plays to a par-72 and a maximum distance of 6,358 yards. The course rating is 70.7 with a slope rating of 124.

Finally got a chance to play here as its now open for Public play with great spring rates. The weekly rate of $30 w/cart you can enjoy playing from Blues 6,578yd / 71.8 / 125 down to 4,493yd / 64.5 / 110 from one of the seven (7) scorecard selections on this 36/36 seasoned layout. Talking to some of the older members, the original nine (9) hole were designed by Donald Ross and Tom Bendelow jointly around 1921/1922. Then in 1972 William Newcomb added the 2nd nine holes to intermix with the original design. Even though there's 50 yrs between designs, the layout is seamless to see any differences. I chose to play from the Blues because the Whites (6,358yds) shared the same tee box with only 10yds difference for each tee. The Rye grass fairways were full coverage and mowed tight up to the smooth Bent grass greens. Having free practice balls at the driving made for a nice warmup. The Front 9 holes are all straightaway hole layouts that show its teeth is sand trap placement (tee to green) and mature treelined narrow fairways. The #2 hole is a 486yd uphill Par 5 that plays 30-40 yds longer to a tipped front green. The #3 downhill 404yd Par 4 tightens up at 200yds out with traps and trees. With #4 a 428yd Par 4 having the same tightness to protect its Hcp 2 ranking. The #5 Par 3 at 213yds has a big flat green waiting for you thats a little downhill. The #7 just a long flat 563yd Par 5 with trees and sand traps awaiting those that stray. The #8 Par 3 at 154yds has you facing into the northwest wind with a sand trap across the complete front of green. Finishing up with a 360yd Par 4 on a open fairway, will make you feel good. Back 9 starts out with a fairly downhill straight 399yd Par 4 (OB trees LH side) that was playing into the wind about 30yds longer today. The #11 Par 3 at 168yds has a large tree on the LH side of the flight to the green that you either fly or draw to get by it. The #14 Par 4 at 362yd has a big RH corner fairway trap to catch those 200-220yds drives through the corner so stay left-side. The #15 Par 5 at 478yds is a dogleg left and having a draw tee shot around the corner will make this a lot easier. The #17 is their Hcp 1 hole because at 473yds, this Par 4 is not only long, but its uphill all the way. The downhill #18 Par 4 at 413yds is just long that leads to a uphill sand trap protected green. Three (3) tough finishing holes that you will remember when you look back on your score card. I ended up shooting 41/41 w/33 putts on this great conditioned and designed course. Must play if you find yourself traveling through the I-94 / I-69 Marshall intersection area. (Great dining room overlooking the nearby lake).
